The Kiowas have the highest operational tempo of any aircraft in Afghanistan. Here one Kiowa departs on mission as another Kiowa is inspected after having just returned from patrol. The pilots of Charlie and Bravo Troops 2nd Squadron 17th Cavalry Regiment - part of the 101st Airborne Division - fly missions over the critically contested landscape of Kandahar in their OH-58 Kiowa Warrior scout-attack helicopters. Thinking of themselves as the "infantry of the sky," 2/17 CAV's mission is to fly low and fast over the battlefield relaying reconnaissance information to ground-bound troops - scanning for the enemy, looking for signs of IED placement, reporting on the movements and activities of civilians - and bringing their ship's rockets and machine-guns to bear on enemy fighters when they can be found..
