Just before the fierce assault on the insurgent-held city of Fallujah, 3/1 held what they called the "First Annual Thundering Third Chariot Race," a company-versus-company race complete with costumes, at Camp Abu Ghraib, Iraq, on Friday, November 5, 2004. By hitching up horses they seized from suspected criminals and insurgents around Fallujah, they enjoyed a brief moment of levity before the battle. Kilo Co. charioteers Sgt. Aristotel Barbosa (left) and PFC Alex Nicol (right) raise their arms in triumph after winning their race. Sgt. Barbosa was later struck through the arm by shrapnel in Fallujah, while PFC Nicol lost the lower part of his left leg in the city.
