An Afghan man pleads with with counter-IED military contractor and his interpreter after his companion was shot in the back at the beginning of an exchange of fire between soldiers with Charlie Co. 1st Battalion 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division and Taliban fighters on January 27, 2010. Zhari District, Kandahar, Afghanistan. The man received medical aid from US medics on-scene and then later at near-by FOB Wilson. A search of his belongings by Charlie Co. soldiers revealed that the wounded man was in position of a dog-tag belonging to another 1-12 INF soldier killed earlier in the month by an IED strike. The man was subsequently detained. The violently contested district sits astride the strategically Highway 1 ringroad between Kandahar and Lashkar Gah and is seen by some as the birthplace of the Taliban movement.
